To borrow a very famous catchcry, the Hills are alive with the sounds of…actually, anything you’d like to hear!
Whether that’s the sound of wine or champagne being poured into a glass, a knife cutting into a tender piece of fillet steak provided by a locally-sourced farmer, a live band playing in one of the many historic pubs found in the Hills, or the baaing of sheep in a paddock – the Adelaide Hills really are alive to the sound of all sorts of music.
The picturesque Adelaide Hills wine region meanders across an area extending along the Mount Lofty Ranges from Mount Pleasant in the north to Mount Compass in the south.
Again – similar to McLaren Vale – the proximity to the centre of the Adelaide CBD is an absolute bonus – not just for people visiting from interstate and have based themselves in the city but also SA locals.
The region is probably best known for its sauvignon blanc grapes the revel in the Hills’ cold climate.
That said, the district continues to carve out a reputation for its quality red wine varietals.
But don’t tell that to lovers of champagne, as the Adelaide Hills is also home of some of the state’s most popular producers of “bubbly”.
“The charm and rich history of the Adelaide Hills never ceases to amaze me,” Nev said.
“Each time a take a tour to a winery or a restaurant or a pub in one of the region’s historic towns, I always learn something I didn’t know before,” he said.
“Hahndorf is known around the world due to its strong German heritage and popular tourist drawcards, and places like Stirling and Mt Lofty are virtually household names to many.
“But it’s when you leave the better known parts of the Adelaide Hills that you stumble on absolutely fabulous wineries tucked in behind lesser known townships like Woodside or Lobethal or Oakbank – just to name a few – that bat way above their average in what they have to offer.
“That’s another one of the joys of my job – finding those hidden treasures.”
All tastings must be pre booked and during tastings people must be seated and follow the winery’s Covid-19 safety plan.
